Hi everybody, Dr. Eric Cobb back with you.
I hope you’re having a great week.
This week, I want to talk to you about something that’s really foundational in the Z-Health system. Really, the way that we’re going to talk about this is from a couple of different perspectives. I’ve always said that I’m very foundational, meaning I want to know why I’m doing things.
At Z, we could do it two different ways. We could say, you know what, as a Z-Health professional, this is how I work with clients. This is how I help them achieve their goals. Conversely, we could look at what our clients really want or need and design our programs around that.
What we choose in Z is to do this perspective. We want to know what it is that our clients need, and the whole system is built to help people achieve that most quickly. Why this is important is after working with thousands of people around the globe, we figured out that there are really five things that people walk in the door to see a Z-Health professional for.
I want you to write these down because it’s going to be a very important task for you this week. If you will pull out a piece of paper, or get your computer ready you’re going to write down five things.
Body composition change. Number one: Body composition change means I want to be smaller, I want to be bigger, or I want to be more muscular, I want to be less muscular something along those lines. The reason that most people go to a gym is to go you know what, I will look different on the outside. Body composition change.
People also show up for pain relief. They won’t go you know what, my knee, my shoulder, my hip, my head, whatever, I want to be out of pain because it’s affecting my life.
Injury prevention: I am an athlete. I don’t want to hurt my knee, or I’m 20 years old now. I want to make sure that I live a long time, so I want to make sure my heart is healthy. Those are both different types of injuries, so people come for injury prevention.
They also come for performance enhancement. Maybe you’re a soccer player. You want to run faster.
Finally, people also come for motivation and accountability, meaning you know what, if I can do this on my own I would. I need someone to help me. I need to borrow some of your motivation.
Those are the five reasons that people come. Again, body composition change, pain relief, injury prevention, performance enhancement, motivation, so write those down. Once you have those written down, I’m going to ask you a very important question. I want you to take those five things and go, what’s most important to me?
What we see a lot is people come in, and they go you know what, I want to change what I look like on the outside. In other words, I want body composition change. When we really sit and talk with them, they go you know what, really I’m in a lot of pain. One of the reasons I can’t exercise is because my foot or my ankle or my knee, and so I need help with that too.
What I’m going to ask you to do is very carefully consider those five different categories and put them in order of what you need the most. I can always guarantee you, if you’re not working with a Z-Health professional, the likelihood is that you haven’t had this conversation with your trainer or coach or healthcare provider.
You haven’t said you know what, this is what I want in my life, and this is the order in which I feel like it needs to be done so that you can have a conversation around it. That’s number one, is you want to take that information, and you want to go you know what, most important to me is pain relief. That’s number one. Then motivation, that’s two. Give yourself a rank order, again to start a conversation. Number two however, is also a super-important idea around this. This is one of the things we talk to our trainers about all the time. Most people get locked in to one way of doing things.
Think about this, if you want all of those things in your life, if you want to have body comp change and pain relief et cetera, the likelihood is that you’re using one modality to try and achieve all of that. If you run for weight loss, you probably think okay, if I just run differently my knee will get better, and if I run longer then my heart will be stronger, or whatever. This is really challenging because like I said, people find something that they love, and they go oh, I’m going to achieve all of my goals utilizing this one thing. It’s not just clients that fall into that trap but professionals as well.
The whole Z-Health system says you know what, there’s probably a better and smarter way to achieve each one of those goals. As professionals, we need to have our tools that allow us to really focus in one step at a time. Like I said, this week, this is what I want you to consider. Number one, what’s important to you, and number two, are you trying to use the same thing every day to achieve all of those different goals? If that’s the case, take a deep breath, and realize there is probably a better way and we may be able to help you with that.
Make sure that you think this through. If you have questions about this, give us a call. We’d love to talk to you in the office. Drop us an email. We can always give you the information about how we can help you directly from headquarters, or we can put you in contact with a Z trainer. Find A Z-Health Trainer
If you’re already working with a Z trainer, you may want to have this conversation with him/her because it will really help direct your training in a much more intelligent or safe way. Finally, if you’re a trainer, coach, a physician, and you’re interested in incorporating a lot of the Z-Health concepts into your work this is how we do it.
All in all, like I said, if this engenders any thoughts, any questions for you please let us know.
We’d love to help.
Thanks, have a great week.
